What is an LED Light?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. It is a type of solid-state lighting that uses a semiconductor to convert electricity into light. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs or fluorescent lamps, LEDs are highly efficient, long-lasting, and compact.

Basic Concept: What is a Diode?

A diode is an electronic component that allows current to flow in one direction only. An LED is a special type of diode that emits light when an electric current passes through it.

Structure of an LED

An LED is made of a semiconductor material, usually gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium phosphide (GaP), or gallium nitride (GaN), which is doped with impurities to create a p-n junction.

  • P-type material: Has an excess of holes (positive charge carriers)

  • N-type material: Has an excess of electrons (negative charge carriers)

Where these two types meet is called the p-n junction.

How Does an LED Work?

Here’s a step-by-step explanation of how LED light is produced:

1. Electric Current is Applied

  • When a voltage is applied across the LED in the forward direction (positive to the p-side, negative to the n-side), electrons from the n-side and holes from the p-side are pushed toward the junction.

2. Electron-Hole Recombination

  • At the junction, electrons meet holes.

  • When an electron recombines with a hole, it falls to a lower energy level.

3. Photon Emission (Light)

  • This drop in energy is released in the form of a photon — a particle of light.

  • This phenomenon is called electroluminescence.

4. Color of the Light

  • The energy gap (band gap) of the semiconductor determines the color (wavelength) of the emitted light.

    • For example:

      • Red LEDs: smaller energy gap

      • Blue or white LEDs: larger energy gap

Components of an LED Light

An LED lighting system includes more than just the diode:

ComponentFunction
LED ChipEmits light via electroluminescence
Heat SinkDissipates heat to keep the LED cool
DriverConverts AC power to DC and regulates current
Optics (Lens)Focuses or diffuses the light
HousingProtects internal parts and provides mounting structure
