What is CRI (Color Rendering Index)?

CRI measures how accurately a light source reveals the true colors of objects compared to natural daylight (which has a CRI of 100).

  • CRI scale: 0 to 100

  • The higher the CRI, the more accurate the color appearance.

  • CRI >95 means the light source shows colors almost exactly as they appear in natural daylight.

Why High CRI (>95) Is Essential in Garments & Fabric QC?

1. True Color Matching

  • High CRI lighting ensures that fabrics, threads, and dyes appear as they truly are.

  • Low CRI light (e.g., <80) may make whites look yellow, reds look dull, or blues appear off-shade.

  • Ensures consistency with brand colors, buyer specifications, and design intent.

2. Detection of Subtle Color Differences

  • In quality control, you often need to detect very minor color deviations between:

    • Dye lots

    • Fabric rolls

    • Sample vs. bulk production

  • CRI >95 lighting makes slight mismatches (e.g., off-tone greys, uneven dyeing) much more visible.

3. Accurate Inspection of Defects

  • Some defects (like streaks, uneven dyeing, or shade variation) are only visible under high-quality lighting.

  • Low CRI can hide or distort these issues, leading to rejections by buyers later on.

4. Standardized Lighting for Buyer Approvals

  • Many international buyers and brands require inspections under standard light sources (like D65 with CRI >95).

  • Ensures what QC teams see matches what the buyer sees under similar light.

  • Helps avoid returns, disputes, and quality claims.

Difference Between CRI 80 vs 95 in Real Color Matching

 The difference between CRI 80 and CRI 95 may seem small on paper, but in real-world color matching — especially in sensitive fields like garments, textiles, printing, or product design — it can make a big impact.

How BST D-65, U-30, TL-84 Improve Fabric Checking Accuracy?

1. BST D-65 (Daylight 6500K)

What it is:

  • Simulates natural daylight at noon (CCT ≈ 6500K)

  • CRI: Typically >95

  • Used as a primary reference light for color evaluation

Why it improves fabric checking:

  • Reveals true and natural color of fabric

  • Highlights shade differences, dye inconsistencies, and optical brightness

  • Ensures consistency with how the garment will appear outdoors or in daylight

  • Helps QC teams detect slight mismatches that might be invisible under other light

2.TL-84 (Retail Store Light – 4000K)

What it is:

  • Simulates cool white fluorescent store lighting

  • Common in European and Asian retail stores

  • CCT ≈ 4000K, moderate CRI (~85–90)

  • Lets you see how garments will look in-store lighting

  • Ensures colors don’t appear off or dull under retail conditions

  • Helps predict customer perception at the point of sale

  • Important for brands selling in global markets

3. U-30 (Warm White – 3000K)

What it is:

  • Simulates warm indoor lighting

  • Common in US retail stores and residential environments

  • CCT ≈ 3000K, with a warm/yellowish tone

  • Ensures fabric doesn’t look too yellow or dark under warm lighting

  • Reveals how the color shifts under different environments
